This is one of my favorite snacks. The fact that a hot chocolate fits right in to any "diet" is amazing! Chocolate is actually quite good for you, as it is full of antioxidants. It's the sugar that gives it a bad rap. So don't hold back on adding a little chocolate to your life! As long as you get sugar-free chocolate, you've got my full permission to indulge. This Easy Keto Hot Chocolate is a quick and easy way to do just that!
Making Keto Hot Chocolate - The Easy Way
I'm lazy. I like to cook, but do not enjoy spending hours creating some complicated version of a very simple drink. Just, why? There are many recipes for hot chocolate out there... many of which involve the stove, powdered chocolate, sweeteners and more. I pretty much just skip all that and make mine the lazy way. There are two ways I consistently make hot chocolate:
- Unsweetened Plant Milk + No Sugar Added Chocolate Chips. The official recipe on this page uses this method.
- Unsweetened Plant Milk + Keto Cup by Evolved (I use the "coconut butter" flavor, but feel free to try the others). To do this method, simply swap the chocolate chips in the recipe for one Keto Cup. Personally, this is my favorite method. It has a richer chocolate flavor and less sweeteners.
That's all you need. Just a milk + a chocolate. Usually I add some "extras" like a dollop of heavy whipping cream, vanilla extract, whipped cream, etc. but those are completely optional. As long as you've got milk + chocolate, you're good to go.
Make it Vegan
To make this Easy Keto Hot Chocolate vegan, just skip the dairy. As I mentioned above, it's not necessary. As long as you've got an unsweetened plant milk + chocolate, you're good. However, by removing the heavy whipping cream, you are removing 10g of fats from the recipe, so you might want to replace it with 2 teaspoons of coconut oil.
Choosing a Milk
Almond milk, coconut milk, hemp milk, macadamia milk, hazelnut milk... all good options. You could use any of them. Just make sure you buy unsweetened! For this recipe I use unsweetened hemp milk with vanilla, because it has a naturally sweet flavor and a higher fat content than most of the others. Yes, you can get the vanilla kind as long as it's unsweetened. When in doubt, check the nutrition label for carbs and sugars. At the grocery store, you can usually find these plant-based milks in two places: the refrigerated milk section and the non-refrigerated milk section (next to the condensed milk, evaporated milk, etc.).
Can I use regular dairy milk? Well, that depends on what your carb limit is. One cup of whole milk has 12 net carbs, which is much more than the plant-based milks. To compare, all of the plant-based milks above have less than 1g net carb per cup.
No sweetener?
Nope. And the reason for that is because I am using chocolate chips that already have a sweetener. I use Lily's No-Sugar-Added Dark Chocolate Baking Chips, and if you look at the ingredients you'll see that the chips already include three different types of sweeteners: erythritol, inulin and stevia. In addition, the vanilla hemp milk has a natural sweetness to it. So with those two combined, I do not feel the need to add any additional sweeteners. However, you could add 2-3 drops of liquid stevia or monk fruit sweetener if you prefer.
Nutrition and Macros (Fat/Protein/Carbs)
Above, I talk about two different ways to make Easy Keto Hot Chocolate. 1) Using chocolate chips (the official recipe below) and 2) Swapping the chocolate chips for one Keto Cup by Evolved. The nutritional facts in the recipe card is for the first way, but I wanted to include the macros for both ways, so here they are. The macros for one serving (this recipe makes one serving):
- Made with Lily's Chocolate Chips / Made with an Evolved Keto Cup (flavor: coconut butter)
- Fat: 21g / 23g
- Protein: 2.9g / 3.9g
- Net Carbs: 4g / 3g

Perfect for those chilly days and nights! Great recipe, Chelsea 🙂
I added a little extra liquid stevia to my hot chocolate to assuage my sweet tooth. I just bought a whipped cream maker and make my own sugar-free whipped cream, which is a lovely topping.

I used hazelnut milk instead of hemp milk and it turned out delicious!
